Spay and Neuter FAQ at Century Veterinary Group

When it comes to spay and neuter surgery for your pets, our team at Century Veterinary Group is available to help you. We have extensive experience and a true dedication to providing your pet with the best possible procedure and outcome. Because it is so important to spay and neuter your pet, we are happy to answer all of your questions when you come in for an appointment. Below are some of the most common questions we receive.

Is Spaying and Neutering Painful for My Pet?

As a surgical procedure, we use proper sedation medications to allow your pet to feel no pain during the procedure. Also, by using surgical laser in lieu of a scalpel, post operative pain and discomfort is dramatically reduced.  Most animals will feel some discomfort after the procedure, but this is short lived. We also provide pain medications as needed.

Is Spaying and Neutering Expensive?

Generally, spaying and neutering costs are significantly less than most other types of major surgery. The younger the pet is, the less expensive the procedure will be. Low-cost options may be available to you.

Will This Procedure Change My Pet’s Behavior?

The answer to this is mixed. If your pet is affectionate and happy, this isn’t likely to change. However, it does help to reduce aggression and territorial traits in pets, making them more social and less tense. In fact, cats and dogs that are spayed or neutered are more likely to show affection to humans.

How Old Should a Dog or Cat Be to Be Neutered or Spayed?

When you bring your pet in for an examination, we’ll offer information to you about pet’s specific needs. In most cases, we recommend spaying and neutering for dogs and cats prior to, or soon after, their first estrus. With large breeds, we often like to wait until they are about a year of age, but still prior to their second estrus.  Doing this at about six months of age is best because it is less risky, and gives us a chance to see if any retained deciduous teeth (baby teeth that did not fall out on schedule) need to be extracted at the same time. However, even if your pet is older than this, he or she should still be spayed or neutered.

Should Pets Have a Litter Before Being Spayed?

We do not recommend this. There is no benefit to the animal for this and spaying prior to the first heat is much easier on the pet.

What Are the Benefits of Spaying and Neutering?

Pets benefit in a number of ways. Hormonal balance is one key benefit. This helps to reduce the risk of some diseases including cancer in female animals. It can also help to improve life expectancy and helps minimize compulsions and agitation. It also helps to control the pet population and reduces the number of pets euthanized each year because they do not have homes.
